Years go by yet nothing changes.

It's been 155 years since the end of slavery in the United States of America yet here in #Canada in 2020 there are still several alleged unidentified mass graves of Indigenous and African people. Our society cannot heal its wounds if we do not first acknowledge all of our history as dark and ugly as it may be.

Before the era of the underground railroad and before slavery was abolished in the USA, about 1000 African slaves were brought into Canada by their white owners. About 300 of them were brought into the province of Quebec. These people fail to appear in the Canadian census records of the time because their births, deaths and marriages were not recognized by the state. Documented evidence published over the years suggests that a group of these African slaves are buried in Saint-Armand, Quebec 85 km South East of Montreal, Quebec. The ministry of culture and communications mandated a study in 1997 but pulled funding shortly after due to conflicts with the present owners of the land.
