Prostate cancer costs 1000s of lives. Screen a man and he survives.

There are currently NO screening tests for ANY male-specific illnesses yet 1000's of men will die this year of prostate cancer in the UK. Women rightly get screened for life threatening conditions such as cervical cancer and this is essential and right to do, men should benefit from similar screening.

Is it necessary? Yes! In 2014 there were 3224 new cases of cervical cancer and 890 deaths. The equivalent figures for prostate cancer? 46,690 new cases and 11,287 deaths! Those figures from the Cancer Research website.

The symptoms for prostate cancer are extremely difficult to identify and appear to be very easy to miss or ignore as they could all be related instead to some other more minor ailment. That's not a reason not to screen, it's precisely why screening SHOULD be done; to ensure that men get timely advice even if the symptoms appear to be mild or even absent.

Guidance for doctors from Prostate Cancer UK suggests that it should be left up to men to initiate contact with their doctor if they feel at risk rather than calling men in for the currently rather unreliable PSA test as a screening test.

But why leave it to men to initiate the discussion? Men of a certain age should be invited in to screen for prostate cancer risk factors and offered the PSA test if appropriate

Turning a blind eye is not the answer, screen for prostate cancer. Invite men in to see their doctor to discuss this issue and to decide whether a PSA test is advisable.
