NXT: Vote down Dutton's citizenship bill

The Nick Xenophon Team senators have the power to stand for a welcoming and multicultural Australia. They can do their part to help stop Dutton’s agenda of fear and hate by voting down his Citizenship Bill. This bill will prevent many residents of Australia from becoming citizens and delay people’s eligibility for three years. It tells migrants they are not welcome here. It gives the Immigration Minister immense power over people's lives, including the ability to overrule normal appeals process.

Migrants were delighted and encouraged when NXT immigration spokesperson Senator Stirling Griff told Fair go for Migrants members calling for the bill to be scrapped at a Senate hearing that he “agreed with your positions”, and at the same time posted on facebook that the bill was “misguided and will have a negative impact on our multicultural nation” (23 August 2017).

Since then, we have waited for an announcement from the NXT senators that they will be voting against the whole bill. The longer we wait the more we fear that NXT are making a deal with the government to amend the bill and then support it. Over 10,000 submissions against the bill were received by the senate inquiry. The only organisation to support it was the Australian Monarchist League.

Senators Nick Xenophon, Stirling Griff, and Skye Kakoschke-Moore: please stand for fairness and with migrants who have lived here for years and want to make Australia their home. Help end the sickening uncertainty we have suffered since Dutton’s announcement on 20 April. Please make an announcement now that you will reject all of Dutton’s Citizenship Bill, as the ALP and Greens have already done.
