After 18 months and 256,000 (at that stage) signatures, Scott and I delivered this petition to Jeremy Hunt MP (Secretary of State for Health) at the Department of Health, with copies also going to Sally Davies (Chief Medical Officer) and Duncan Selbie (Chief Executive of Public Health England).
It was an amazing event, with many friends, family and supporters attending with us. We were brilliantly supported by my MP, Matthew Pennycook, and Sir Nicholas Soames MP, Patron of Group B Strep Support and of course, Jane Plumb, CEO of GBSS. It was at the same time both heart-breaking and inspirational to also meet some fellow bereaved GBS parents, like us battling for routine testing and information to be given to pregnant mums across the country. I gave a short speech about why I started the petition and what I wanted to say the policy makers to whom it is addressed. At the end I said:
“I started this petition because I could not bear the thought of the continued suffering of the needless loss and heartache we have experienced by losing our beautiful Edward due to Group B Strep. The level of support it has received is well beyond any target I could have imagined and today, I am here to speak with the force of over a quarter of a million voices to those with the power to stop GBS from wrecking any more lives. To them I say – make that change right now; action the petition’s objectives today and help prevent the heartbreak of baby loss to GBS.”
It was an extremely significant and emotional day for Scott and me, and, I think, everyone there and many who were with us in spirit. My greatest hope is that it will prove to be a very significant day in the long-running campaign to offer the simple, safe GBS-specific test for ALL pregnant mums in the UK. I hope it will turn out to be the day that the people with the power to do something will take notice and take the action so vitally needed to save babies like Edward.
The event produced a huge amount of media attention, including me appearing in the evening’s Channel 5 News with Matt Barbet, and the next morning I was very pleased to be invited on to This Morning with Dr Chris Steele MBE (another Patron of GBSS). Holly and Phil were very supportive and Holly even said that testing was a “no brainer”. I completely agree.
Thank you to you all for your ongoing support and I am so pleased to see that our message continues to grow, with a massive increase since the petition was delivered. Please do keep sharing and spreading awareness.
Best wishes,
Fiona
