Today I went to watch the Public Accounts Committee session on 'Care for people with a learning disability'. It is the job of the Committee to ask difficult questions about how public money is being spent and whether the Government is achieving what it has promised to do. Simon Stephens, CEO of NHS England, Jane Cummings, NHS England's Chief Nursing Officer, Ray James from Enfield Council and Chris Wormald from the Department of Health all answered questions. I wanted to hear what they are doing to make sure people like my son can move out of hospitals as soon as possible. So it was sad to see that the people in charge of making change happen quicker with the Transforming Care Programme do not seem to feel any sense of urgency. When Dan Scorer from Mencap and Viv Cooper from the CBF were talking, we knew they had listened to families' experiences before they gave their answers. But I did not feel confident that Simon Stephens and Jane Cummings had any idea of what families are going through. I felt that both of them avoided the core of the situation. They did not reflect parents' experiences. It felt much more like they were talking politics, and there was a lot of jargon. They said lots of people have been discharged already - 136 beds have been closed - but didn't tell us how many people had been moved out in total, or how they are planning to close the rest. My worry is also that the beds which are closing are in NHS England places and the private hospitals are the hardest ones to get to. My son is in a private hospital so what reassurance can I get that his case is high on the list? I didn't feel that happy with the evidence given through the Public Accounts Committee, I felt that parents should have been invited to speak who else can show the committee how it is for their loved ones that are currently at atus like my son? We parents are the experts, experts by experience we can tell the committee how it is and what we feel is best for our children, but I am glad I went. I hope people will continue to ask for answers from the people in charge. Keep sharing my petition and thank you for your support.
