Aug 6, 2014 — Wow... So, this took off faster than I anticipated... Some background on how I came up with the idea and why I drunkingly submitted (hence the bad grammar, no proofreading) this petition on change.org: 3 days ago at a bar, I overheard two presumptuous Seahawks fans talking about future travel plans to Super Bowl XLIX (or LI, whatever it’s being called) to see their beloved team host a 2nd Lombardi trophy. Yes, they are already claiming a win and this team is a dynasty, as I have been listening to this nonsense ever since I moved up to Seattle in January. A 20-something female friend of theirs chimed in, asking who will be playing the half time show. Then, she began to ramble off a string of suggestions in her NW Valley girl voice (where every statement ends with the intonation going up…? As if she was asking a question…?). She mentioned Justin Beiber and Selena Gomez, Iggy Azalea, that band that sings “Rude”, among many other terrible ideas. So, with this in mind, I went home, created the petition and and submitted to the masses on Reddit. I have gotten a lot of support, and even more hate. Oh well. Haters gonna hate. Now, I am a life long football fan, former high school player, and enjoy classic rock artists performing on the big stage. Loved seeing the Stones, Tom Petty, and the Who. Foo Fighters or AC/DC would be excellent future choices too. However, they already appeal to the ‘Average Joe’ fan, and do not reach out to a wider audience. Furthermore, I do not want to sit through another Black Eyed Peas disaster or see Nicki Minaj verbal vomit some lyrics that I cannot understand. And do you want Miley Cyrus?!? Because this is how you will end up with Miley Cyrus!!! Think about the Super Bowls of past years, when you had no vested interest in either team, especially during a game that was a blowout or boring. What did you remember the most? I’m betting it was typically the humorous commercials, or some kick a** halftime performance. Why not combine the two? Sure, many consider Weird Al a bit, a gimmick comedic artist. But you cannot deny that he has crafted his art and been successful over the past 4 decades, gaining the respect and approval of every artist he parodies. I have loved him since I was a child, and I know he puts on a helluva live show. Sure, it may seem childish and some might say it would tarnish the big game (again, see the aforementioned Black Eyed Peas). But, most of these naysayers would be hypocrites if they said they never laughed at a corny Super Bowl beer commercial, or didn’t enjoy a Weird Al song in their youth. If you do not watch the Super Bowl or the half-time show, then why bother voicing your opinion. If you think change.org should be used for world peace or to fight the war on jealousy, then by all means, go create your own petition… Weird Al is top of the charts right now for a reason, and I guarantee it’s not because of the typical football players/fans rocking his music during a pre-game warm-up, tailgating, or half-time song selection. The Super Bowl is a national event that reaches out to numerous non-football fans, so why not attract a bigger demographic and support for the game? Just imagine him out there rocking with Jack Black & Melissa McCarthy, while parodying Pharrell & Robin Thicke. Heck, those artists can even join him on stage, start off with their songs before Weird Al kicks in with his versions. I personally think it would be a hit, and would be more talked about than the game itself. Which is why I started this petition. Hope to hear back from Weird Al himself, and would he even do it if invited. Only one can dream... Please continue to share and pass this on to everyone who would love this to come true!!
