The standard response to any illegal fishing is to report this to 13FISH. It's assumed that this works but where is the evidence this makes a difference? We've are told that this enables VFA to get more staff, but how many are enough?
- What's your experience?
- Do you use it and how often?
- What difference do you think it makes?

An assessment of risk to the values of Ricketts Point would likely estimate that illegal fishing is of high risk, especially since it's possible to wipe out all specimens of recovering species, in a short time. What we need to know is, how much effort is enough? It's our opinion that the only way to strictly protect the sanctuary is to make it completely off limits. That increasing the number of enforcement staff is unlikely to alter the status quo ... and besides, the government is beset on cutting VFA's enforcement budget.
This sends the clearest signal that alternative protection measures are necessary.
