Rebuild the Newport Chartist Mural

On 13th October 2013, the Chartist Mural in Newport was destroyed in an underhand act of breathtaking arrogance by Newport City Council’s ruling Labour administration.
This act of cultural vandalism against a much-loved display of Newport's proud heritage was against the wishes of the people of Newport who had made their feelings known prior to the destruction, and who showed their outrage after the destruction.
Following the destruction of the mural, there was nationwide criticism of what the council had done, and the nature of the act. The story appeared in national newspapers and vocal critics of the destruction included actor Michael Sheen.
Mr Sheen wrote an open letter and said “The vicious irony of something that was created to celebrate those who risked much for the good of all, being wiped out without consulting the people themselves, and under the auspices of a Labour led City Council serving the needs of profit above all else, is both absurd as well as tragic.”
In response to the criticism the Council set up a commission to investigate alternatives to the mural. However, it is clear from the feedback we’ve received that neighbours don’t want alternatives or soundbites, they simply want their Mural back.
It is time to stop the procrastination and right this historic wrong!
The Newport Independents Party has pledged to lead the rebuilding of a replacement. This will be achieved by:
1. Encouraging people to view the Newport Matters council newspaper online and to opt out of receiving a print version, thereby enabling us to invest some of the money saved into a fund to progress plans.
2. Sourcing additional investment through crowdfunding.
3. Making this a city-wide project by raising revenues via live music events, concerts and street collections etc.
4. Applying to the Lottery Commission and other bodies for grants.
The people of Newport should be allowed to decide where a replacement is sited, with one suggestion being the 'orange wall' in the foyer of Newport Market. This would create a tourist attraction and drive footfall to small businesses.
This petition calls for a non-political cross-party motion to full council asking all councillors to support the plan. The Newport Independents Party will work across party lines to make it happen, and openly invite all to get involved.
