Odeon Demolition Begins 3/1/2017

So, 2017 has begun and it marks the beginning of the end of the once beautiful, magical place that was the Paramount Theatre/Odeon Cinema, Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K. Early interior clearing of the building started in November 2016 and now seems to have advanced to the point, where entire demolition will not be far off. I would like to genuinely thank each and every person, who did absolutely anything in an attempt to save and/or develop this magnificent piece of architecture, which went far beyond its mere structure. I spent many happy times there as a kid and an adult, like a lot of people, Star Wars sticks out as an amazing event to witness, especially in the majestic setting of the Odeon 1. But there was so much more, numerous James Bond films, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Aliens, Pulp Fiction, the list is endless. There was always something special and exciting about seeing a film there. The incredible red carpets, staircase, balcony, chandeliers, lighting, decor, atmosphere, even the ice cream, were second to none. I have to be honest, all I have learnt from the experience in contacting politicians, the media (local and national) big business (Property owners/developers) Newcastle City Council, Preservation Societies, 'Celebrities' (Hate that word), the House of Lords, Film institutes and others is: Having a lot of money buys you anything, especially in Newcastle upon Tyne. I got sick of hearing the word 'powerless' thrown at me, I thought we lived in a democracy. Especially disappointed with Newcastle Civic Centre, who also claimed to be 'powerless' aren't they supposed to represent the people of the City not Rich businesses based abroad? To quote David Bowie 'The shame was on the other side'. Newcastle City Council certainly qualified big time on this one, with that statement. The many voices of good, honest, people, who understand the history and future of the City are dismissed to cater for the all powerful, rich elite, who will destroy everything that means something and should exist for generations to come, for greed and greed alone. This is not politics, this is the truth. So it is with seriously heavy heart, I am closing this petition down, having conceded defeat. I'd like to thank everyone who signed the petition once again, it does mean a lot, it seems there is always injustice but there is always hope. So long Odeon Newcastle, always loved you.
