Our latest correspondence with Newcastle City Council regarding tree felling at Woolsington was handled as a complaint. We are informed this complaint has not been upheld by the council, who insisted the ‘appropriate course of action was taken’. The Forestry Commission has now conducted a site visit and confirmed the ‘majority of the trees posed a risk to the safety to those people using the track both as a private access and those people using it for unauthorised access’, concluding that ‘no offence has been committed under the Forestry Act.’ The Forestry Commission’s management team will be made aware of the agreed development of the woodland, all of which is supposedly protected. If such unauthorised activity can go ahead unchecked before construction works have even begun, there is little hope remaining trees will be preserved, particularly given there is no authority apparently willing or able to take enforcement action.
