Protect Newcastle students and put in place urgent safety measures on Wellington Street

Every day there are over 4,000 crossings of Wellington Street, an unrestricted road in between the Urban Sciences Building and Business School.
The Students' Union and University believe that students are in danger, as cars have been recorded going 40, 50 and even 60mph down Wellington Street, with no traffic restrictions or bollards.
As part of the £350 million project, it was agreed that Wellington Street would be a 'to rather than through' road. This has not materialised, despite millions of pounds worth of University investment and heavy footfall on the crossing which is due to grow with the opening of Science Central.
Alongside comprehensive data proving the risk that this poses to students, anecdotally students have shared stories of times that they've nearly been hit by vehicles, as well as the anxiety that this risk induces in the long term.
By signing this petition, you can make sure that Newcastle University students in the present and future will be protected when going about their daily studies. We will be presenting this petition alongside a comprehensive report.
