We believe in an Acorn Road that is better for people, with a pleasant environment that will attract shoppers to local businesses. Most arrive to Acorn Road on foot, bicycle or by public transport. The current design priotises cars over these other modes.

Newcastle City Council has realised this and has proposed to widen pavements and raise them to the level of the road, to make crossing easier. A one way system will reduce the amount of traffic using it as a through road, making it safer for those on bicycles. Some parking spaces will be removed to free up space for pedestrians, however those who choose to drive will still have plenty of spaces close to the street. 

In a recent consultation, several options were given to local residents, and option 1 was the clear favourite, receiving 48% of responses. Unfortunately a small group of residents refuse to accept this democratic process and are attempting to block the scheme. 

We are calling for the Council to uphold the results of the consultation and implement the improvements to Acorn Road as soon as possible.
