I live in the small town of Twizel in the Mackenzie Country of N.Z. State Highway 8 goes past our town. This is a busy highway. Just a few km down the road is the turn-off to Aoraki Mount Cook village on State Highway 80. Tourist traffic has increased significantly in recent years and our roads have become a lot more dangerous. One area of particular concern to locals is the T intersection where Highways 8 and 80 meet. At present this is controlled with a Give Way sign. At least one fatality has occurred there in recent years as well as numerous accidents and near misses. Many locals believe that tourists coming back down from Mount Cook are not expecting the T intersection. I believe the Give Way needs to be a changed to a compulsory Stop and that drivers need to be alerted with a flashing warning sign. This would improve the safety of locals, those travelling through on SH80, and that of visitors to our area.
