The Opportunities Party (TOP) started this petition to Newshub and

New Zealand is more than just Labour and National.

Sign this petition to show NZ media that Kiwis want a Minor Parties debate ahead of the 2020 General Election.

Minor parties in New Zealand are not being given a fair amount of attention by the news media in the build-up to the 2020 General Election.

Following TVNZ’s decision to cut out parties outside Parliament from its 2020 Election 'Leadership Debate' - it shows that TVNZ is acting as the gatekeeper of democracy.

This is bad for democracy, bad for the New Zealand public, and goes against the very principle of our MMP system which is set up to allow different parties a voice in Parliament. It's time the media respects our MMP system - which the public has voted for twice.

The excuse often given for not giving small parties more voice is that they represent the interests of a small group of people. This argument is not good for choice overall and often, many of the minor parties in Parliament don’t poll much higher than those out of Parliament. The media will not allow smaller parties the opportunity to discuss and debate their ideas equally and fairly. Instead, they are only giving a voice to parties who are already in power, which serves to further deepen the power of the incumbents. This is a growing problem that must be tackled now.

In 1996, the first year of the MMP system, about 65 percent of the vote went to the two major parties. In 2017, it was over 80 percent. There’s no doubt that 2020 will be even more dominated by NZ’s two biggest parties. New Zealand is a proudly multicultural and diverse nation and deserves more than a few select voices to represent our varied interests. We need diversity in Parliament to ensure we have a strong democracy, and not one that becomes ever more polarised in ways we have seen overseas

We are calling on all major news outlets in New Zealand – MediaWorks, TVNZ, NZME, Stuff, RNZ, and Māori TV – to host a minor parties debate before September 19th to give New Zealanders fair and equal choice.

Small parties to be included in a Minor Parties debate should be those the Electoral Commission has deemed deserving of public funding. This means inviting:

  • The Opportunities Party (TOP)
  • The Māori Party
  • Advance NZ
  • New Conservative
  • Sustainable NZ
  • NZ Social Credit Party

Democracy needs diversity. NZ needs a Minor Parties debate.
