Moments ago, the New York State Assembly passed with bipartisan support the bill to protect LGBT youth from the dangerous and discredited practice of conversion therapy.
Today the New York State Assembly stood with us and agreed that we’ve allowed our children to be subjected to harm for too long and that state licensed therapists should not be allowed to practice widely discredited and damaging conversion therapies that try to change a young person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
Please help us call on the Senate to swiftly pass this bill along with GENDA to secure basic civil rights for transgender New Yorkers and get both bills to Governor Cuomo’s desk for his signature this session.
As trans rights activist and Emmy-Award winner Daniella Carter said facing the Capitol Building on our rally stage at yesterday's Equality & Justice Day, "As a youth, it’s infuriating to think that the government nurtures conformity instead of nurturing individuality. Many will counter argue that and say do not make assumptions or sensationalize a community. But what am I to think when I live in a state that does not have a ban on conversion therapy, AKA, changing someone from being their authentic self? Why would we want the youth of the future to change from being who they are simply because we do not conform to the gender norms?”
Together, we can build a state government that is responsive to our community’s needs and dedicated to igniting equality and advancing justice for all.
