Recently New York and now California have started working to Ban end-to-end encryption on smart phones. This move would be a terrible blow to both individual privacy and against personal security. Numerous securities firms have warned that disallowing encryption would just help criminals that might want to steal consumer data while leaving criminal and terrorist organizations free to develop their own encryption software. I do not live in New York or in California, but a ban on encryption would affect all U.S citizens as smartphone manufacturers will not maintain different versions to create acceptance for two states. Because the two states in question are large states this would create an all-or-none effect. I do not want to be left vulnerable because of misguided legislators in other states.
