Dear Supporters – We have a huge victory to announce on behalf of the chimpanzees. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), who has provided emergency care for past two years, has successfully negotiated an agreement with The New York Blood Center to ensure care for all the chimpanzees for the rest of their lives. NYBC will provide $6 million to HSUS and Humane Society International (HSI) who have assumed responsibility for the lifetime care for these chimpanzees. The funding provided by NYBC is about half of the estimated cost of their lifetime care, including not only basic care like food and water but also veterinary care and the construction of appropriate sanctuary facilities in Liberia. They had neither access to water nor food. Thanks to a caring Ebola researcher on the ground, we coordinated an emergency response. With your help, after years of tireless effort, we can provide these hero chimpanzees with the top-notch care they deserve. Congratulations to the chimpanzees and all who worked on their behalf! Your voices, through this petition, kickstarted our campaign. You signed, called, wrote, and donated; HSUS organized and sustained emergency care; peaceful but persistent protesters (especially those led by Donny Moss and Their Turn) did not let NYBC think we were going to abandon the chimpanzees as they had. The constant pressure gave HSUS/HSI the leverage they needed to successfully negotiate a fair financial agreement with NYBC. All of our combined effort created this victory for compassion. Thank you to each and every one of you, and, of course, to the HSUS led team in Liberia who have been taking care of the chimpanzees. You are all heroes! There is still more work for us to do. HSUS/HSI will be working with the Liberian government to give these chimpanzees the high quality sanctuary care they deserve, but the chimpanzees will still need our support over coming years.
