Save the Powerhouse Museum

Save the Powerhouse Museum

The issue

The Powerhouse Museum in the heart of Sydney's CBD has been providing the public a chance to have a glimpse into Australia's past as well as various places around the world. This museum is a rare kind of museum, allowing patrons to interact with artefacts and volunteers in order to learn about our past. Drawcards for the museum are Locomotive no. 1 (known as Loco 1), the first steam locomotive to transport passengers in New South Wales, The Boulton and Watt Steam Engine, this is the oldest working rotational steam engine in existence (made in 1785) the Powerhouse has one of very few working Boulton and Watt machines, and the museum also has a working Strasbourg Clock Model (built in 1887). Along with these, temporary exhibitions such as the Gamemasters exhibit from 2014 are highly visited attractions. The museum recently completed renovations and opened a new cafe (Black Star Pastry). The museum has been in its current Harris Street position since 1893.

This will all change. It was announced on the 26th of February that the site on which the Powerhouse Museum sits will be sold by the New South Wales Government to developers to build apartments. The museum itself will move to Parramatta, although there is no land/place set out for it to go. The move to Parramatta is to create a large arts and culture precinct.

The current site where the museum sits is a fantastic location, close to Town Hall station and Central station. More tourists head to the CBD than the west, and even though the proposed site (which has not been set) will be supposedly close to Parramatta station, which is 23.2 Kilometres from where the current location is.

The state government cannot take a piece of Sydney's history from the place it has been for over a century, we must not let them.

Please sign this petition to let them know the public will not stand for this.
