New Canaan's Utilities Commission is recommending that two 110' (11 stories tall) towers each with a 5,625 sq. ft. "compound area" at its base be built in our town - one behind West Elementary School's playground and another either in Irwin Park or at the Nature Center. These towers are to be leased to "at least" 4 cell phone carriers. Despite these gigantic monopoles being placed in our parks and at our schools, the Commission has admitted there still will not be adequate coverage in parts of our town. They still need a "remedy" for the northeast portion of town. Also, the town will still need numerous other systems to increase coverage. So why are these towers being proposed?
MANY other towns similar to New Canaan have refused to build these towers to improve cell service but have found alternative methods (a few examples: Palo Alto, CA; Wellesley, MA; Gross Pointe, MI; Rye, NY; Montecito, CA; Vail, CO and others) and still others have passed ordinances not allowing them within 750 - 1500 feet of a school or daycare (including Winnetka, IL, Greenwich, CT, the city of Los Angeles, and the entire European Union). Despite assurances from the Commission about aesthetics, these enormous devices cannot be "stealth"; they are more than twice the height of the tree line and the base is larger than most homes. The town will not allow the safety of these towers to be debated, believing that the government's proclamation of their safety has laid that argument to rest, however, there clearly will be a detrimental effect on property values, not just neighboring properties, but on the whole town. When a potential resident visits town will that resident choose the town with the cell towers looming over its elementary school and parks, or just drive on to Darien or Greenwich or Westport? What would you do?
THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO IMPROVE CELL PHONE COVERAGE. The Utilities Commission claims they are more "problematic" or expensive or less appealing to carriers but there are alternatives. Many, many towns have found these solutions. People do not move to a town for good cell reception, they move to New Canaan for its excellent schools, beautiful parks, and its small town New England charm. Let's find a better way.
Please sign this petition and forward to other residents and let the Selectmen and Town Council know your views.
