Due to the sensitive nature and graphic content of the Netflix series “13 Reasons Why,” we believe that Netflix should provide the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number, 1-800-273-TALK (8255) and/or the Crisis Text Line, 741-741, before or after each episode.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15 to 34-year-olds. We are concerned that the series could actually perpetuate suicidal ideations and trigger those who are already struggling. We believe that providing crisis intervention lends a necessary resource and support to an especially vulnerable group of people, and it shows due diligence on the part of the network.

It’s imperative that we address the stigmas surrounding mental illness and suicide, and it’s promising that Netflix is trying to start a conversation. It is our hope that you will join us in our mission to provide the subsequent support and appropriate resources.
