Since the release of our heartbreaking investigation into Nestlé’s dairy supply chain, tens of thousands of you have urged the food giant to churn out dairy-free options. After a major step forward with its new vegan bacon cheeseburger, the company now seems to have gotten its wires crossed by dishing out meatless pizza and lasagna that still contain cruel cow’s milk. As Nestlé scrambles to keep up with the sizzling demand for vegan products, it recently unveiled plans for vegan cheddar, marking the brand’s first step in addressing the curdling demand for cow’s milk since the release of our investigation. The company will be selling a vegan bacon, cheese, and burger trio to restaurant and foodservice customers to provide an entirely vegan meal--a landmark step at a time when many fast food chains are still pairing Beyond and Impossible burgers with animal-derived cheese or mayo. 

And the company even recently launched a partnership with ingredient company Corbion to investigate plant-based products made from microalgae -- including dairy alternatives.

Yet despite this progress, this week’s move to unveil DiGiorno pizza and Stouffer’s lasagna topped with meatless Awesome Grounds -- as well as dairy-based cheese -- leaves us scratching our heads. 

Compassion Over Killing’s recent investigation exposed extreme cruelty behind the food giant’s dairy products: hot irons being burned into calves’ flesh to permanently destroy their horns and growth tissue in a cruel process known as “dehorning” or “disbudding.” So far, Nestlé has failed to address this systemic cruelty or to commit to providing cruelty-free plant-based alternatives across all its dairy brands.
