Kia ora koutou,

One year ago we collectively got together & drew a line in the sand about racism in the media.

A lot has happened in the past year, both positive and negative. I think we should all feel proud of the dialogue that opened up in our country & the ongoing discussion around racism our petition sparked.

For this, I am incredibly proud.

After presenting our petition to government a long correspondence followed & parliament felt the language in the petition was “unparlimentary” therefore they could not consider the petition.

We went back to the strategizing board & felt in many ways we had achieved what we had hoped to, which was standing up to racism.

At the same time I have been dealing with a defamation lawsuit from Bob Jones, who is challenging my right to express my opinion and to speak out in the public interest. Together with my outstanding legal team LeeSalmonLong we have been defending the claim and will continue to do so.

So, my work continues around this kaupapa & I just wanted to send a message to say thank you all for your support.  I am sorry that we could not get the result in parliament for this petition but do not fret because:

“He iti hoki te mokoroa nāna i kakati te kahikatea.”

“The mokoroa grub may be small, but it cuts through the Kahikatea tree.”

Have a safe Waitangi Day.

Nā,
Renae Maihi

He uri no Te Arawa raua ko Ngapuhi iwi.
