You always have you guard up immediately when someone starts a conversation with “No Disrespect”! Yesterday we received a message with that opening; the crux of the question was “is this really any different than the shows that have been on for years about people killing deer, or birds? Or all the shows about people that kill crocodiles for a living? Or am I missing something here?”. I think this was an excellent question and if the petitions' position is not clear it certainly needed to be made clear, so I have attached the response below. Thanks to Bryan F. for asking the question, this petition is as much yours (the signers) as mine. If you have a question please ask, there is no stupid question, no wrong question, no disrespectful question. Thanks for your support, and here is the response: “No disrespect felt and I think something that I should probably address more publicly as well. The key issue really is that sharks are being killed on a commercial scale to the tune of 75-100m per year. The problem with this is that without sharks, which are the apex predator in the ocean, the oceans quickly get out of whack. An example is that if you remove sharks from a reef, you end up with the smaller fish being pushed out by bigger fish (no sharks to eat them) no smaller fish species, which clean the coral, leads to algal blooms. Algal blooms lead to reef death, which leads to all death on the reef. Sharks unlike deer, crocodiles and game birds are on the verge of extinction. In the species you cite all of those have clear seasons and quotas to ensure a healthy population. Sharks do not. Shark hunters is glamorizing the killing of 3 species that once they go beyond Vulnerable, it will be Critically Endangered and there is no real way back from that. The petition for me and why I started it is because I have 2 kids, if we do not make killing sharks unacceptable to the general public we face extinction, maybe not in yours or my lifetime but certainly if my daughters have kids it could be a real possibility and I could not sit on the couch watching TV that day and do nothing.” One very last thing, check this documentary out (only 60mins) was made on a friend of the petition, lots of great info on why sharks are critical. (May not suitable for you have kids if under 12 in the room) http://www.smithsonianchannel.com/sc/web/show/3406405/shark-girl Thanks again for your support, keep the pressure up.
