Petition updateNational Maternity Inquiry - Stop Babies Being Harmed and DyingMaternity Safety Betrayed: £95 Million Slashed to Just £2 Million

We are heartbroken - and furious.  Again.

Today, we wrote to Health Secretary Wes Streeting to express our absolute disgust at the Government’s decision to cut ringfenced maternity safety funding from £95 million to just £2 million.

This funding was not a luxury.  It was promised in direct response to the avoidable deaths of our daughters, Kate and Pippa, and hundreds of other babies and mothers whose stories shaped the Ockenden Review.

The money was a commitment to change - a promise to stop this from ever happening again.

Now? It’s been wiped out.

65% of maternity units in England are now rated “inadequate” or “requires improvement”
Maternal deaths have risen by over 50% since 2019
NHS midwives and doctors are exhausted, burnt out, and trying to care for women in impossible conditions
Black women are still nearly 4 times more likely to die in childbirth than white women
Mothers in deprived communities are far more likely to lose their lives – or their babies

This cut is not just a budget decision.
It is a betrayal of grieving families.
It is an insult to every midwife fighting to provide safe care.
And it is a death sentence for more babies and mothers.

The Government made a promise.  And now, with the stroke of a pen, the promise has been torn up.

We are calling for:

  1. Immediate reinstatement of the full £95 million funding
  2. A UK-wide, four-nation public inquiry into the state of maternity services
  3. Proper involvement of campaigners and families who have given years to make care safer

This isn’t politics.  This is about preventing more avoidable deaths – of babies, of mothers, of sisters, of daughters.

Please SHARE our petition as widely as you can so Wes can hear all the voices demanding the changes our babies died for:https://www.change.org/p/national-maternity-inquiry

Let’s make it impossible for them to ignore us.
We will not stop.  We will not be silent.
And we will not let our daughters down.

Thank you.
