We oppose Jordan Peterson speaking at the National Gallery of Canada

The National Gallery of Canada (NGC) has an upcoming event ("Exploring the Psychology of Creativity") with Jordan B. Peterson. While he has years of expertise in his field and is very prolific, he has also used his platform as professor to dismiss those working for racial justice, religious tolerance, and diversity in academia. He has even refused to respect his students' chosen pronouns.
It is unfortunately not unique to hear of yet another medical professional who seeks to invalidate the experience of trans people, and another teacher who chooses to expressly contradict his students about their existence and being in the world. That he has a clinical practice and is training the next generation of psychologists to align with his worldviews is sad and unsurprising in our current climate in North America.
A national institution aligning themselves with a professor who actively endangers and creates an unsafe environment for his trans students doesn't deserve to profit off of it. The NGC's choice to host Peterson is tacit endorsement of his disdain for marginalized groups.
Peterson is extremely active online and has many platforms to share his views and scholarship already. We feel strongly that the NGC ought to invite a different Canadian academic who has used their platform as a scholar to promote original research.
