This past few months, we have received an unprecedented number of reports from climate scientists saying that we Have a climate crisis. Many animals (I.e giraffes and bees) are rapidly falling under the endangered species status. Our largest ice shelf is melting and our C02 levels exceeded 415 ppm, the highest recorded ever in human history. If left unchecked, it could be the end of human civilisation as we know it.

The cause of the climate crisis is not overpopulation as many would think. But rather, it’s the result of powerful corporations whose irresponsible actions have caused severe damage to the environment. Just a 100 companies are responsible for 71 percent of our C02 emissions, with Exxon and Shell being in the TOP 10.

This is why I am demanding that our government declare a climate emergency. If we want to battle climate change, we cannot just see it as an Environmental issue but rather an economic and social one as well.  The climate crisis spans borders and we cannot fight this alone.

Climate change has already reached our doorstep, thousands of fishes are already dead in Lim Chu Kang jetty due to warmer temperatures. We are having erratic rain patterns and an increase in heatwaves. Dengue cases are rising and those who suffer first are the most vulnerable, our children, our sick and the elderly.

The solutions are simple. We need to stop drilling for oil and gas and keep fossil fuels in the ground. We need to transition into 100 percent renewable energy and we need to phase out plastics. We need the government to declare a climate emergency so that we can place this on a national agenda.

The question right now is not whether we can save the Earth, but rather how much of the earth we can save. Our individual actions to combat climate change may inspire others but as a collective we can bring about genuine change.
