Schools and Universities across the UK declare a Climate Emergency
The Issue
Last year. The IPCC (intergovernmental panel on climate change) reported to the world that there are 12 years left to regulate climate change and to ensure temperatures do not rise above 1.5°C. Should we not take any action, the planet is on course for 3°C of warming or more which could see drought, extreme heat, and poverty for millions around the globe. Ecosystems around the world that already face extreme stress would dissapear and our coral reefs would die out. This is an emergency.
In the limited time that we have left, our government has stalled on the action that must be taken. We can stop significant climate change but it requires immediate action. Across the UK, awareness around climate change is growing and following recent school strikes and demonstrations we have shown that we have the will to stop significant climate change. But we can do more.
It is for that reason that we demand that schools and universities across the UK declare a climate emergency and to draft an emergency environmental policy. We demand that the truth be taught about the scale of the crisis we face. It is no longer good enough to downplay the scale of the threat climate change poses to us all. This is an emergency. So following the recent school strikes for climate and demonstrations held by extinction rebellion, we believe it is now time for students and teachers to take the lead where the government has failed. Act now to save our planet - Sign now.
