We have seen how comfortably people use the terms 'deaf' and 'dumb' to address a hearing impaired person. We have started this petition against such terminology. The word 'deaf' is self-sufficient to describe hearing and speech impaired people. It need not be accompanied by 'dumb.' 'Mute' is a better word in case you need to address someone's speech impairment. We want schools, colleges and organisations to remove this terminology from their names. India is lagging behind in its sensitivity and awareness about the deafness even though it has the largest population of deaf people in the world estimated to be 18 million approximately. Even schools, colleges and organisations for deaf use the word dumb in their names. As responsible and inclusive citizens we need to discard a terminology which is insulting and hurtful for such a large community. This petition was created after a group of deaf people got tired of being addressed as dumb and even being represented as such in media. You can be the change by signing this petition and getting it heard by the right people. Take a pledge to never use the term 'deaf and dumb' to address a deaf person.
