Dear friends of Herrick Lake and Danada,
Still disappointing news...Pulte has submitted another round of updates to its development proposal for the 67-acre Nokia property that shares a one-mile border with Herrick Lakes and Danada Forest Preserves—unfortunately these latest plans have not remedied or adequately addressed many public concerns.
The development remains much too close to the forest preserve borders. The houses remain tightly packed, green space and yards are minimized, streets are crowded, and open space is seriously lacking.
Specifically—despite the Naperville Planning Commissioners' direct feedback to Pulte at the Feb. 3 hearing—the plan's density remains excessively high: The proposal still has a 227 lots on 67 acres; it has reduced density by only a paltry 5 percent overall from the original 241. Pulte is also requesting numerous requests for variances (so that houses can be placed even closer together than what is code). Only 23 out of 487 trees on this parcel are slated to be preserved; 464 will be cut down.
Of course, we remain worried about the irreversible impact this mega-development will have on the adjoining Herrick Lake and Danada forest preserves. Will DuPage lose its nesting eagles here? Despite whatever permits Pulte says it secures and assurances given, chances are the nesting eagles will prefer solitude elsewhere to 227 houses under construction.
Please help us protect this unique, fragile area. The next public hearing with the Naperville Planning Commission will take place via Zoom at 7 p.m. March 17.

Photo of sandhill cranes shows part of the Nokia property that is slated to be razed and bulldozed under the current plan. Requests to save this open space as a conservation easement have been so far denied.
