Dear LRC Supporters,

First and foremost, thank you all so much for signing and sharing this petition. We have received over 1,900 signatures thus far! We are so grateful for your support in advocating for UCSB students’ continued access to privileged, confidential legal advising and consultation.

On the morning of June 30th, 2020, the following open letter (https://ivtu.as.ucsb.edu/files/2020/06/LRC-IVTU-letter.pdf) was sent to UC and UCSB campus personnel which included your names and testimonies.

We just received word that the university has decided to extend the current LRC contract through July 10th, 2020, for the purpose of allowing more time for discussion. While this does not guarantee that the university will completely reconsider the job description change in-question, it appears to be a step in the right direction.

You spoke up, and the university listened. Thank you for advocating on behalf of the UCSB student community. We have made progress, but we are not finished yet. As it now stands, UCSB students are still at-risk for losing their complete access to privileged legal counseling services from our campus LRC.

Please continue to sign and share this petition. I will be sure to share another update closer to July 10th with more information.

I also want to extend my sincerest thanks to the Chair of the Isla Vista Tenants Union (IVTU), Alex Young, for his hard work in putting together the aforementioned letter to campus personnel. IVTU’s caseworking services are offered as an addendum to the current LRC contract. Alex has shown great dedication in advocating for the protection of these services for both UCSB students and the Isla Vista community. Thank you, Alex, for all you have done in supporting this campaign!

Lastly, I wanted to share with you an article about this campaign that was published earlier this week in The Daily Nexus. The Nexus is a local news source for UCSB campus and the Isla Vista community. Check out the story here: https://dailynexus.com/2020-06-28/lrc-fights-to-retain-confidential-counseling-for-ucsb-students-which-could-disappear-by-july/

Thank you again so much for your continued support.

Gratefully,

Sabina Menzhausen
