In 1872, Emperor Norton wrote and had published — in his "imperial gazette," the Pacific Appeal — three Proclamations setting out his vision for a great bay-spanning bridge linking Oakland and San Francisco via Yerba Buena Island. Sixty-four years later — on 12 November 1936 — the Emperor Norton Bridge opened for traffic. Some call it the Bay Bridge. ;) On Saturday 12 November 2016, the Emperor Norton Bridge turns 80. If you're in the Bay Area on that day, please join The Emperor's Bridge Campaign for a celebration to wish the Emperor's bridge a happy birthday and to... Show your support for putting Emperor Norton's name on his bridge in 2022 — the 150th anniversary of the Emperor's proclamations setting out the original vision for the bridge.
