For three years, American Legion Post 13 in lovely Putnam, CT has held an annual Henry Breault Golf Tournament in September. This year, the goal was to raise money for Putnam's Veteran's Park, which they raised $12,000 profit in this one event adding to the already significant sum raised by all veteran's groups to support the project.
Putnam is Breault's birthplace, he likely spent most of his childhood in the town and is buried in his family plot in St. Mary's Cemetery. Putnam is very proud of their local hero, as they well should be and I have had several successful presentations and book signings in the area.
I managed to be a sponsor for the Golf Tournament, and a signed copy of The Silent Service's First Hero was entered as a prize in their raffle. Post 13 have been great supporters of Breault's legacy and last night (10/21) Post 13 joined USSVI's Groton Base and Green Mountain Base in supporting the efforts to get a submarine named in his honor, USS HENRY BREAULT.
Brian Maynard, the president of the committee who runs the golf tournament, forwarded Resolution 761, "Name a VIRGINIA-Class Submarine After Medal of Honor Recipient Henry Breault," and all members unanimously voted to support and send to the State American Legion, following American Legion Resolution Guidelines.
I was inspired by the support in Putnam and joined the American Legion, and I highly recommend looking into supporting the American Legion, VFW, or USSVI, who have all supported the effort and petition!
