North Carolina Comprehensive Community College Student Government AssocationRaleigh, NC, United States
1 May 2023

Hello! This is Destiny Perez, the N4CSGA Public Information Officer. I'd like to update you on what's going on with SB692.

The bill has currently been amended to give the local board of trustees the choice to allow student trustees on their boards. This new amendment still excludes the N4CSGA president from serving on the state board. As of this week the bill was referred back to the higher education committee, a new edition of the bill has come out with new amendments brought forth in today's meeting, and is moving on to the rules and operations committee for May 2nd at 2 pm.

Track the bill here: https://www.ncleg.gov/BillLookUp/2023/S692

A formal email has been sent to the senators who wrote SB692, and senators who are on the rules and operations committee to have a sit down meeting at the legislator in Raleigh on either Thursday May 18th or Friday May 19th when we visit for the State Board of Community Colleges meetings.

We would like to bring the following bills to your attention as well, since they pertain to the community college system. SB114, SB377 SB406, S680, HB96, HB149, HB601, HB683, HB715

The N4CSGA has been working to draft a resolution to send to the makers of this bill. At the last town hall we discussed with the student body what should be included and highlighted in this resolution as well as who it should be sent to. This would include the makers of the bill, Governor Cooper, and local media outlets. We plan to have this resolution out to the public by the end of this week. Last week we received a resolution from the East Carolina University SGA in opposition of SB692, this resolution was sent to the legislators as well as local media sources.

The legislators who sponsored and cosponsored SB692 and HB1092 have been invited to the upcoming town hall at Wilkes Community College. However, we have received no confirmation of attendance. The new system office president, Dr.Cox will be in attendance, and doing a Q & A with students. This event will be from 1-4pm Friday, May 5th. Dr. Cox will be in attendance from 1 pm - 2 pm.

We are encouraging your local SGA's to draft resolutions in opposition of this bill as well as writing letters to the legislators. We are encouraging the promotion of our petition as it has almost 500 signatures (it is open to the public). We would also like you to share student and alumni SGA stories about the impact they've had in their respective communities. These will be used in the aforementioned meetings.
