My niece known as Ms Dhu died after being arrested and held for a small amount of unpaid fines. She complained, screaming for hours in pain, police just dismissed her as a drug user, which she was not. It was this dismissive attitude from the police that meant she died, alone, in a cell, after begging for help. Her lifeless body was dragged and shoved into the back of a police car where she was driven to hospital and declared dead. The police have fought hard to make sure no suggested changes are implemented. What is even worse - several of the police officers involved have been promoted since her death. It makes me sick, but this is the painful reality we live with. We have not seen justice. We have recently fought a legal battle to have the footage of her death and treatment released. The police didn't want anyone to see it, as they know that footage showing their actions make what they did more real and disturbing to the general public. I am writing to ask for your help. I can't save my niece, but I want to help other young Indigenous kids and their families. https://chuffed.org/project/copwatchnjp People want to be able to film interactions with police that experience or see where police aren't behaving right. Then we can use this footage to show what the problem is and get the police to start treating us better, and taking what we say seriously. We need to get more respect. I'm asking if you can to chip in to help get some Indigenous journalists that know about how we do this, and human rights lawyers so people feel confident about their rights, to run training in the most impacted communities in Australia. I know lots don't have the funds and that's ok, but if you can, I really want to see this happen. I don't want to see more of our people killed in police custody. https://chuffed.org/project/copwatchnjp Shaun Harris (Uncle of Ms Dhu)
