The more I hear grandparents speak of losing their grandchildren, the more I understand it as a traumatic event. The grief and uncertainty that surrounds this loss, it trauma.

One-day you are holding your grandchild close, sharing hugs, kisses and conversations, then suddenly they are abruptly removed from your life.

I remember when my family disowned me, I was 16 years old and this significant loss created and continues to create ripple effect that will last forever. As I read and hear the experiences of grandparents, I am transported back in time. I remember thinking back then, how much harder it is, because they are in my arms reach and yet I cannot touch them. I questioned everything, even myself as I battered away such comments as "well what did you do wrong", the shame and guilt was immense.

Grandparents and grandchildren have done nothing wrong in these cases and yet they are left to feel a loss, akin to a traumatic event.  One of life's most precious emotions, happiness is compromised after trauma and naturally give rise to grief. Grandparents in this situation are expressing such grief not just sadness, but as feelings of shock, denial, confusion, anger, fear and panic for both grandparents and grandchildren.

I have no doubt that these events will impact on today's and future generations of children, that may be left feeling abandoned.

Please keep sharing and signing this petition, it is time for those that remove loving relationships from children to be held to account. It is not in the interest of the child to put how you feel before a child.
