What and When
The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty (INF) was signed in 1987 and banned the deployment of all types of ballistic missiles from rages of 500 KM to 5’500 KM. This treaty was put into place to lower tensions in Europe between the United States and Russia. However, recently Russia has put missiles that exede the treaty limitations back into place. The U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that if Russia did not remove their missiles within 6 months, then the U.S. would start to place nuclear capable missiles in Europe to compete with Russia.
Why
While we can’t be certain why Russia violated the treaty, it is obvious why the U.S. is threatening to pull out of the treaty as well. The United States does not want to be seen being out done by Russia and perhaps in a disadvantage if Russia has its nukes ready.
How to help
The ways you can help to stop this are to send letters to your local MPs to get them to propose a renewal of the INF treaty or to propose to European members of NATO to refuse the U.S. build up of missiles to get the moral high ground over Russia.
