Please Stop the Unregulated sale of Pets on Facebook !
The Issue
This is not so much a petition as it is a plea asking Mark Zuckerberg to stop the unregulated sale of pets on Facebook.
Everyday more and more "buy and sell"pages pop up on Facebook that are selling animals. For us, the hundreds of thousands of animal advocates using that site, it is heart breaking and repulsive.
People can't change what they don't know. We sincerely hope that he is not aware of the suffering that commercial breeding animals live through and that is why he allows these "breed for profit" breeders to use his site.
Most of the animal sales on Facebook are puppies, so that is what we will address here.
Mr. Zuckerberg:
It's estimated that since classifieds and online sites have allowed the sale of pets on their sites, the puppy/dog trade has increased by 300% in North America. This translates into a severe over population crisis of dogs in Canada and the U.S, which in turn translates to 4-6 million healthy dogs (usually under 2 years of age) being euthanized yearly just in North America. Not only is this vile and inhumane, it is heart wrenching because it is preventable! Since puppy mills and backyard-breeders have found an easy way to sell their puppies, commercial breeding has skyrocketed.
One of the things that has become epidemic is the new "Urban Mills". There are no "true" numbers for these breeders because they are not licensed, so unregulated.
Because it took so much effort to find homes for puppies prior to the internet, these "breed for profit breeders" would only breed their dog occasionally.
That has all changed since the internet. These same breeders instead of having one or two dogs breeding occasionally, now have anywhere from 6-40 dogs, breeding each one twice a year. Four dogs can fit nicely into a 2ft by 3ft pen...stack them ..they can fit almost anywhere. People have puppy mills in their basements, garages , dinning rooms and even in spare bedrooms. Easy money, no taxes, very little over head and usually, complete anonymity. Online sellers of animals are not subject to regulations. No licensing. No inspections. It’s a relatively safe way to hide skeletons while preying upon the unwitting puppy lover. To stay off the grid, these breeders cannot take dogs to the vet. They often inbreed mother to son, brother and sister etc. and a majority of puppies are born with genetic defects and are deathly ill.
Most people are not aware of this issue and some even deny it exists. Denying it does not make it any less real or end the suffering of the commercial breeding dog. This breeding epidemic is killing our humanity and Facebook unwittingly is helping to spread the disease.
Please Mark, help us help these animals and stop the unregulated sale of animals on Facebook. You give a voice to everyone on your site and we are using ours to ask you to PLEASE stop allowing pet sales on Facebook.
