Good news everyone - Waterfox, an independent browser based on Firefox, has pledged to continue support for XUL-based Firefox add-ons even once Mozilla's support for those add-ons ends in November with Firefox 57 [1]. Waterfox just had it's version 55 release and the project is gearing up for some major changes over the coming months in preparation for giving your favorite XUL-based Firefox add-ons a future.
Here's some more about Waterfox, from the project homepage [2]: "Waterfox focuses on giving users choice while also helping make the world a better place. Waterfox is partners with Ecosia, a search engine that plants trees with its generated revenues. The browser itself is focused on power users, which lets you make the important decisions. There is no plugin whitelist, you can run whichever extensions you like and absolutely no data or telemetry is sent back to Mozilla or the Waterfox project."
Since Mozilla is unlikely to change its current plans for XUL-based add-ons, I'd encourage everyone to check out Waterfox and consider supporting the project. If you'd like to try out Waterfox alongside your existing Firefox install, it's pretty painless. All you need to do is:
1. Sign into Firefox Sync on your current main Firefox install [3]. This will save all your bookmarks, add-ons, etc. so you can access them from other Firefox installs.
2. Download Waterfox from https://www.waterfoxproject.org and install it to your machine.
3. Launch Waterfox and sign in to your Firefox Sync account from step 1.
4. Voila - all your Firefox data should be imported into Waterfox and any changes you make to passwords, bookmarks, etc. will stay in sync between the two browsers, allowing you to use both of them however best fits your needs.
Many thanks to the Waterfox project for all their hard work and congrats on the v. 55 release!
