We've reached a significant milestone with 2500 supporters signing the petition to stop the basalt quarry.
A quarry work plan has been lodged with Moyne Shire but is yet to go to public notice so that people can read the detail and lodge objections. Our major concerns relate to the environment including threatened flora and fauna species, water consumption and contamination, aboriginal cultural heritage, silica dust, blasting noise and other impacts.
Significant support from community members and technical experts is beginning to build which is great news. (Update 14/6): If there is a sufficient groundswell of support we may consider registering a separate e-petition through the Legislative Council e-petition website. Note that in order for an e-petition to be tabled in the House, it must be sponsored by a Member of the Legislative Council. This local petition through change.org may be presented to Council if and when a vote on the quarry is conducted at a council meeting as evidence of community support to stop the quarry. So share this petition on pages, with friends, via email or however you convey messages to friends and family.
We'll keep you posted when the application goes to public notice on Moyne Shire's website. And if you know of professionals such as geologists, environmental assessors or supportive politicians then let us know.
