Cinemark theaters in Colorado have embarked upon a statewide trial of open caption showings! The trial began on Saturday, June 12 and continues for three months. For those three months, Cinemark will schedule open caption screenings for all movies available with open captions, twice a week.

The days of these screenings vary. Some are weekend and some are weekday. To find these screenings, check the websites of Cinemark Colorado theaters because as of this writing, the websites’ movie-type search engine filters do not yet have an option to search for “open caption.”

Advocacy for open caption movies spearheaded by Hearing Loss Association of America Boulder Chapter led to this exciting new development.  This news is monumental because not only does it mean that Colorado residents will have their choice of open caption movies, it also means that people who visit Colorado will have the same choice! Now is the time to visit family and friends in Colorado, and enjoy a movie with them for what for many will be their first open caption experience.

Open captions will now be widely available in Colorado for deaf and hard of hearing people PLUS others in the following communities:

• Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
• Auditory Processing Disorder/Auditory Neuropathy
• Autism
• Children learning to read
• Disabled
• Down Syndrome
• Dyslexia
• ESL
• Learning Disabled
• Meniere’s Disease
• Tinnitus

AND hearing people who like or prefer captions!
