Last Monday night, the media reported that MEC’s Board of Directors is planning to sell the co-op to an American private equity firm. The board made this decision without consulting the over 5 million members of MEC, each of whom is a co-owner of the Co-op.
In less than one week, 100,000 people (!!) have signed petitions calling on the MEC board to cancel this backroom deal and $67,000 has been raised to fight the sale in court.
You’ve already signed a petition to stop this sale. Now we need you to add your name to a legal petition to force the board to allow a Special General Meeting of Mountain Equipment Co-operative. We need MEC members and owners to call for a Special General Meeting of Mountain Equipment Co-operative.
Sign the call for a Special General Meeting
(If you’re one of the 7,500 people who’ve already signed to demand a Special General Meeting, read on to the bottom!!)
A Special General Meeting will allow MEC owners to vote against the sale of MEC assets, and elect a new Board of Directors dedicated to keeping MEC under the control of members like you.
MEC’s current Board of Directors has taken notice of how angry MEC members are. On Saturday, it sent an email to members and owners admitting that they, the directors, have not been ‘forthcoming’ or ‘transparent’ about the financial state of our Co-operative.
Even more troubling: MEC held elections for the board of directors earlier this year, but the votes have not yet been counted or released. This calls into question the legitimacy of the current board.
Call for a Special General Meeting now
