MRU West Road Closure

A section between the West Residence and the T-intersection at Mount Royal Gate has been closed. This was supposedly because of an increased volume of non-university traffic, along with pedestrian safety concerns. If the safety of pedestrians is a legitimate concern to the university, other measures could be taken to ensure pedestrians well-being; such as adding more zebra crosswalks. This road closure is a major inconvenience to the Mount Royal students, especially to those living in the West Residence. The closure also poses a safety risk to the students on West Residence, since emergency service vehicles (fire trucks and ambulances) no longer have direct access to the area. A serious safety risk has already occurred this semester, when a emergency service vehicle had to drive across the soccer field in order to attend to an emergency in West Residence Building C. With this closure there is now more obvious traffic near the MRU daycare center and recreation center, which both have high volumes of pedestrians. As well, the traffic on Richard Rd has become more congested which in-turn has increased speeding through the school zone. Reckless driving has been more frequently observed through these areas as it now takes longer for university students to access university facilities. The loss of the ring-road has diminished the appeal of Mount Royal as this direct means of entry previously allowed access to all university buildings, parking lots, Glenmore, and Crowchild. We understand that the reason behind the road closure in front of the new library is due to increased pedestrian volume. However, due to the reasons listed above, the road between West Residence and the T-intersection at Mount Royal Gate should be re-opened to convenience all MRU students. This "safety closure" in one area, has resulted in multiple safety concerns in other areas. We need numbers in order to make this change. Please sign this petition so that we can bring about change, and re-open this road.
