We are calling on MME to take responsibility for the consequences of its original public statement concerning Shelly Phetsai Chanrueang by formally retracting it and issuing a new statement that reflects the fuller context of the situation.

When a company addresses a controversy involving its artist, the public naturally treats its words as an authoritative account of what happened. This makes accuracy, fairness, and responsible communication especially important, particularly when an artist’s reputation and career are at stake.

Scandals and public controversies can have lasting consequences for an artist’s reputation, marketability, commercial value, revenue, viewership, and future career opportunities. The damage does not simply disappear because a company decides to move forward.

In Ms. Chanrueang's case, MME’s original public statement continues to be treated by many people as the most honest and credible account of what happened, despite the company having acknowledged that Shelly was unable to confirm or deny the allegations at the time. Rather than recognizing her silence as an inability to respond under those circumstances, MME treated it as confirmation and incorporated that interpretation into its public statement. This has contributed to an impression that the allegations were based on established facts, even though Shelly had not actually confirmed them.

What makes this particularly concerning is that Ms. Chanrueang subsequently provided her explanation during a TikTok live and issued a follow-up statement. Yet MME has not issued an adequate correction or clarification to its original announcement.

2. Issue a new public statement. Take into account Ms. Chanrueang's TikTok live explanation and subsequent statement, providing the fuller context necessary for the public to understand the situation.
3. Correct the public record. Make it clear that the original statement should not continue to be treated as the definitive account of events, particularly when subsequent information and explanations have emerged.
4. Demonstrate accountability through action. Recognize the lasting impact the company’s public communications can have on Ms. Chanrueang's reputation, professional opportunities, and relationship with her audience.
