The issue

Currently, the New Zealand Government has not publicly pledged a specific amount of funding dedicated to the ongoing care and rehoming of retired racing greyhounds. While support has been provided through the greyhound racing transition process, there is no clear long-term funding commitment that guarantees rehoming organisations will have the resources they need.

We are calling on the New Zealand Government to pledge at least $3.4 million each year to support the care and rehoming of retired racing greyhounds.

On average, it costs around $50 per week to care for one greyhound. This includes essential costs such as food, routine veterinary care, parasite prevention, training, transport, and other support needed while finding a forever home. Over one year, this equals approximately $2,600 per greyhound.

With an estimated 1,300 retired racing greyhounds needing homes, the cost of providing this basic care could reach approximately $3.38 million per year.

By creating a dedicated funding commitment, the Government can help ensure rehoming organisations have the financial support needed to care for every greyhound and give them the safe, happy retirement they deserve.

These dogs gave their all to the racing industry. Now it is our responsibility to make sure they are not forgotten. Sign our petition and help secure a better future for retired racing greyhounds.
