The Issue

As a long-time resident of Saskatchewan, we have witnessed the vast natural wonders and immense agricultural roots as a foundation of our Province. However, the increasing number of proposed data centres  in our communities and province threatens to undermine these very qualities that make Saskatchewan such a unique and wonderful place to live.

Data centres are enormous facilities that consume vast amounts of energy and water, placing significant strain on our local resources and contributing to environmental destruction.  This demand is expected to continue rising as more facilities are built. In Saskatchewan, where renewable energy adoption is still catching up, the environmental impact of these centres could be detrimental.

Moreover, these data centres lead to unintended consequences for our communities. They offer limited employment opportunities due to their highly automated processes, often employing a handful of technicians for maintenance and not much else. Instead of fostering long-term economic growth, they occupy large amounts of land that could be used more sustainably or for more beneficial economic activities for our towns and cities.

Data centres also create substantial noise pollution and heat emissions, disrupting the tranquility that is so cherished by residents and wildlife alike. With Saskatchewan being home to diverse ecosystems and sensitive natural areas, the unchecked development of these facilities puts our biodiversity at risk.

We must urge our policymakers to reconsider the rapid development of data centres in our region and implement strict regulations and environmental assessments before any new construction. We should be investing in sustainable technology and infrastructure that aligns with our commitment to environmental preservation and economic vitality. This could include upgrading our renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, which are abundant in Saskatchewan, ensuring that any necessary data infrastructure aligns with our green objectives.

Join me in calling for a moratorium on the construction of new data centres in Saskatchewan until these concerns are adequately addressed and sustainable practices are put in place. Sign this petition to demand that our government safeguard our environment, community, and future.
