Starting on June 10, 2017, the Scadding Court Community Centre in Toronto, will be pouring 1500 rainbow trout fish into their indoor swimming pool for their annual Gone Fishin' event.
This cruel event takes fish from their natural environment or from fish farms and exposes them to fear, ultimately to be injured on hooks and killed. The event supposedly takes place to offer the experience of fishing to urban kids.
There are many ways that children can learn about animals and nature. If the Scadding Court Community Centre is so concerned about teaching ecology, an alternative would be to fund field trips into the great outdoors or educate children about the wonder of fish in their own environment, NOT in a swimming pool.
Fish don't audibly scream when they're impaled on hooks or grimace when the hooks are ripped from their mouths, but their behaviour offers evidence of their suffering - if we are willing to look.
Neurobiologists have long recognized that fish have nervous systems that comprehend and respond to pain. Fish (like "higher vertebrates") have neurotransmitters such as endorphins that relieve suffering - the only reason for for their nervous systems to produce these painkillers is to alleviate pain. Researchers have created a detailed map of more than 20 pain receptors, or "nociceptors, " in fish's mouths and heads - including those very areas where an angler's barbed hook would penetrate a fish's flesh.
Researchers at the University of Guelph in Canada concluded that fish feel fear when they're chased and that their behaviour is more than simply a reflex. the fish are frightened and ... they prefer not being frightened," said Dr. Duncan, who headed the study.
As if the experience of being chased in a pool, with nowhere to escape isn't bad enough, at the end of the event, the pool is drained and the remaining fish die a slow painful death through suffocation. The organizers insist that the fish are slaughtered 'humanely' but in 2016, an activist witnessed fish being tossed onto dry land to die. When the activist was caught videotaping the atrocity, he was asked to leave.
For two years efforts have been made to work with the public and the community centre to offer education about the cruelty of this 'canned hunt' and ask that it be shut down. Many members of the public are shocked when they realize the event involves catching real fish - they assumed it was toy fish. Others refuse to enter when they learn about the cruelty. However, the executive director has boldly stated that the event will never be cancelled and in fact the cost for participation has more than doubled since 2015.
Please join concerned citizens to cancel this cruel event!
