Groups of 3 or 4: Apply for Executive Director
The Modern Language Association needs to maximize results from its investment in the Executive Director position. To that end, we would like to restore the pre-1980 tradition of faculty appointments to the post. We invite groups of three or four faculty to propose themselves to share the responsibilities of the position on a five-year contract, renewable once. The group proposal should be based on the assumption of equal shares of the current salary of $300,000 and may receive regular increases based on performance. A similar proposal process for an executive position at the University of Alberta yielded a dozen viable four-person group candidacies. If you do not wish to apply, but simply to support the idea, you may sign the petition below. You do not need to be a current MLA member to sign or send a proposal.
Proposal requirements: Groups of three or four only, with a minimum of two faculty serving contingently. The proposal should detail a five-year plan of action for employing MLA's considerable resources in addressing academic labor issues in language studies, including the various fields of rhetoric and composition. The plan should detail which faculty are responsible for the components of that plan, and for other responsibilities of the directorship.
Preferred qualifications: In addition to advanced study in MLA fields and some administrative experience, ideally members of the candidate group will demonstrate experience in activism, public relations, lobbying, fundraising, and nonprofit campaign leadership.
Process: Please publish an application letter and abbreviated candidate cvs to a weblog or website and share the URL in comments below.
