"Animal Advocacy Initiative of Mississippi (AAIM) and In Defense of Animals – Justice for Animals Campaign are taking aim at the Tippah County Mississippi Fair for holding “Farm Animal Scramble” events, during which organizers release rabbits, chickens, pigs, goats and calves into the arena and let small children chase them until they catch them. Rabbits are chased by children aged 4 and under–an age where children have little to no understanding of how animals as vulnerable as rabbits (prey animals with very delicate spines) should be handled. This event is scheduled for August 11th, 2016. The organizations will be contacting Tippah County officials to put them on notice that the cruel mishandling of animals is against Mississippi State law and advising that this event be replaced by family friendly activities that do not cause harm to animals. Encouraging children to chase, catch, and carry rabbits in what organizers believe to be a “fun” event for children desensitizes their developing brains and capacity for empathy while causing needless discomfort and suffering of animals" ....
