Ban the importation and use of gill nets and drift nets in Trinidad and Tobago
The Issue
Pelagics and marine mammals are plagued by the indiscriminate killing of gill and drift nets. Every year hundreds of leather back turtles meet their death because of these nets. Turtles that otherwise create thousands of dollars in foreign currency thru the tourists that travel here to see them nest. Spawning game fish (which attract forex thru sport fishing tourism), Whales, Dolphins, Sharks and Rays are also among the species that fall victim to these ghost nets. Every year dozens of these nets get lost, floating out to sea killing everything in its path. This type of fishing is unsustainable, destructive and cannot continue. Support the call for better legislation to protect our marine life and fisheries.
