Thousands of hectares of forests are being burnt down. On one hand by mafias for the sake of timber to make some easy money and on the other hand by ill-informed locals who believe burning down forests would make way for greener grass and thereby fodder. But at what cost? We are creating immense pollution, losing cleaner air to breathe (with cities like Delhi emitting dangerous levels of polluted air, thanks to these fire, there won't be any forest cover to compensate for it) and water to drink (trees hold water absorbed during rains which collects in aquifers - the only sources of already scarcely available water in the hills, especially in context of the drought like situation our country is currently facing), destroying wildlife in the area (cruel death of varied species of birds and animals) besides contributing to global warming.
